Abstract
This study focuses on incorporating race and ethnicity within multicultural counseling with caregivers of young children. Prior multicultural research has largely focused on work with adults, leaving questions about how providers address aspects of multicultural identity within the counseling relationship with children and caregivers. This was a qualitative analysis of providers working with caregivers of diverse children using an evidence-based practice in an urban community mental health setting. The findings offer information about how counselors build upon basic counseling skills to incorporate race and ethnicity into interventions with caregivers. The findings also highlight gaps in training and practice where providers can improve. The discussion provides implications for future research, training and clinical practice.
