Abstract
The work described in this dissertation required the efforts of peoples engaged in several diverse fields of scientific endeavor. I would like to thank all these people for their efforts and patience demonstrated throughout the course of this work.
The financial assistance of a National Institutes of Health traineeship (1970-1975), the TOPS Club, Inc., Obesity and Metabolic Research Program, and the Medical College of Wisconsin are gratefully acknowledged.
I am especially grateful to my research advisor, Professor Norman Hoffman, whose encouragement, interest and good judgement helped dampen the blows of frustration encountered in scientific research.
Special thanks are extended to Kevin Switala for his advise and patience in teaching me several of the laboratory techniques used in this work. I also thank Jim Budzinski for Collecting gastric samples and performing the physiological experiments with monkeys.
