Abstract

There has been an increasing demand for high specific power electric machines for hybrid/electric aerospace applications in the past few years. Among various types of electric machines, permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) are more capable of delivering higher specific power. This paper proposes a comparison among three different designs of Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) machines with enabled by dual-phase magnetic material used for the rotor laminations. The design procedure is presented, and mechanical analysis performed to demonstrate that the proposed designs are within the acceptable stress constraints. Performance and specific power comparison between all proposed designs and their counterpart designs using conventional magnetic materials is presented. Electromagnetic and mechanical simulation results are included to demonstrate the proposed designs' performance and capabilities.
