Abstract
This paper presents the latest optimization and development in the electromagnetic design of the Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E), Synergistically Cooled Electric-motors with iNtegrated Drives (ASCEND) project, focusing on designing a 250-kW electrical machine for aviation applications that targets high specific power (SP) and efficiency. The final design is achieved through a series of modifications and optimizations to satisfy the project requirements and, more importantly, to ensure the achieved design is a mechanically feasible one that can be manufactured, taking into account the assembly and manufacturing tolerances of the components. The critical design optimizations are mentioned in the paper, including details of the final design and its performance metrics.
