Abstract
This paper aims to provide an overview of additive manufacturing (AM) and its impact on electrical machine design. In recent years, advancements in metal AM have resulted in revolutionary changes in electrical machine design. AM has become a key enabling technology in electrical machines; it offers design flexibility and freedom and helps the machine designer realize designs that have not been feasible using conventional manufacturing methods. It provides fast prototyping at a reduced cost. However, it is relatively new in the electrical machines design space, and the research community is still investigating methods and techniques to properly characterize and provide the necessary framework and tools to optimize designs using the freedom offered by AM. With the current trend towards electrification, specifically for demanding applications such as aviation, a drastic change of technology is needed, which is made possible through AM. This paper provides an overview of how AM impacts machine design and how electrical machine components can benefit from the technology.
