Abstract
The essential characteristic of gilds of all ages is the binding together of men for mutual assistance. From the earliest history of time, when gilds were simple family unions, to our present day, when gilds or trade societies called unions are nation wide, the prevalent idea is mutual aid (in common problems) to all brothers. Let us begin with a study of the ancient medieval gilds which will be synonymous with the study of the problems of man and his struggle to cope with a constantly changing world. It will be a study of man and his progress from an agricultural to an industrial economy.
