Abstract
When the council fathers gathered for the first time at Trent in northern Italy, for what would be one of the most significant councils in the history of Christianity, the renaissance and humanism had already left their imprint on all aspects of western life and culture. The beliefs and spiritual lives of Christians, likewise, felt the effects of humanism. Apart from the very apparent demand for internal reform, the leaders of the church recognized the challenge that humanism posed and the consequent need to address it.
