Abstract
Guidance and Counseling Services in high schools is a product of the twentieth century. Nation after nation are setting up more and better guidance services for the high school students. Taiwan, Republic of China, is no exception. Its birth was in the fall semester of 1968. This beginning of the guidance program in Taiwan high schools also marked an important event in the educational history of the Republic of China. It was also the start of a nine-year compulsory free education. Prior to this date Chinese stμdents graduating from elementary schools have to take and pass a national entrance examination in order to qualify for high school education. The competition was toμgh and stress enormous, there were about J50,000 elementary graduates fighting for about 220,000 vacancies· in first year junior high schools throughout the country. The percentage of acceptance is only 62.29 per cent.1
