Abstract
Two momentous funerals were anticipated in England as the nineteenth century drew to a close: one for Queen Victoria and the other for the Liberal Party. Both had begun their political careers during the 1830's and both had had full and productive lives. Yet, while t he former passed away late in January of 1901, the latter lingered on , suffering from acute exhaustion and the effects of a relatively new disease then ravaging Europe. Symptomatic of the disease was a high fever accompanied by uncontrollable nervous tension that inclined the victim to grasp for everything in sight.
