Abstract
In the months following the advent of the sputniks education is being challenged at an ever increasing rate. Are teachers giving each child a chance to assume his full potential in the skills he will need to meet the challenge of a complex world situation? As at all rungs of the educational ladder, this challenge is being faced and evaluated in the early grades of elementary education. To attain mastery of the many facets of modern .living, it is of utmost importance that the child learn the skills inherent in the reading process. This is one of the most important areas of growth at the elementary level. It is necessary for him to be able to use intelligently what has been recorded by others if he is to share in and ultimately to contribute to the knowledge of the race .
