Abstract
The rebirth of the Polish State after an absence from the European state system of over one hundred and twenty years necessitated an adjustment in the power structure of Eastern Europe . The newly created Polish State was faced with the twofold task of establishing internal cohesion and arriving at a tolerable relationship with her two po1:l8rful neighbors .
