Abstract
The purpose of this study is to present the history of the Saint Anthony Parish, Ellis County, Schoenchen, Kansas. Schoenchen is the sixth and last of the original Catholic Russian-German settlements made in western Kansas in 1876 and 1877. Aside from the various articles and books written in general about these settlements no special study has been made of the Saint Anthony Parish at Schoenchen. At the request of the pastor, The Rt. Rev. Msgr. F.G. Riedel, and some of the parishioners to have such a study made, the writer has tried to comply by presenting this story of their village. It is hoped that it will be of service especially to the younger generation by imparting a knowledge of their historical background, and a deep appreciation of the accomplishments of their forbearers who built their foundations not in sand, but on the firm rock of religion, patriotism, honesty, and thrift.
