Abstract
A review of transcultural nursing literature provides a definition of transcultural nursing and examines various frameworks, conceptual models, and theories of transcultural nursing. Relevant sources in the literature of sociology and anthropology are reviewed to identify unique characteristics of the urban black culture that have implications for health care providers. On the basis of the literature review, health-related cultural characteristics of urban blacks are described using Madeleine Leininger's "Transcultural Health Model". Specific suggestions are made for the inclusion of transcultural nursing content relative to the urban black population within baccalaureate nursing curricula. Suggestions are also made for nursing practice and research.
