Abstract
In a recent Theology Digest article, David Tracy described the systematic theologian's task as: recognizing the classical, events, persons, images and texts; entering into authentic conversation with these classics -- i.e., listening to, reflecting on, correcting, addressing and allowing the fundamental question to take over -- in order to experience an event of understanding and interpreting the classical text for the present. According to Tracy, it is this hermeneutical, reflective process which frees the classical texts to be events of meaning for today, rather than historically-frozen facts.
