Abstract

The manuscript is a collection of the fundamental documents relating to the Treaty of Prairie du Chien with annotations and commentary. Headnotes and footnotes provide an indispensable continuity. Informative headnotes precede every document or group of related papers. For the most part, the primary materials pertaining, to the 1825 treaty are chronologically arranged. The original treaty, followed by pertinent maps, is first; then, a short exposition describes the essential background behind the treaty. Lastly, to prevent editorial segmentation, the journal of the proceedings is presented out of chronological sequence. As with the treaty, the journal immediately is succeeded by explanatory notes.
