Abstract
Is it possible to carry on a counseling relationship when counselor and counselee are both culturally distinct?
The purpose of this essay is to analyze the determining factors which would help the impoverished Peruvian rather than hinder his personal growth. The writer is an American missionary educator who has now spent seven years attempting to promote a healthy and truly beneficial relationship with disadvantaged teenagers in a barriada of Peru--Tahuantinsuyo. She believes that a healthy and beneficial relationship is possible provided the counselor is cognizant of the total life situation of the disadvantaged Indian. Living with and among the people is therefore an additional requirement for the counselor's effectiveness. The scope of this essay is limited to considerations the counselor must bear in mind as she attempts to relate to the culturally disadvantaged.
