Abstract
When critics examine The Winter's Tale in an effort to understand it meaning through genre, they generally consider its significance in terms of tragi-comedy. The plot seemingly moves toward a tragic catastrophe, yet, the regenerative power of love averts the pure tragedy which culminates in death. In order, though, to perceive the nature of this love, we first must view the dimensions of the play against their tragic backdrop.
