Abstract
Nursing productivity in acute care settings has an increasingly popular topic in these times of health care cost containment. As institutions attempt to staff their nursing units according to fluctuating census levels, supplemental staffing agencies are being looked to as a resource. However, the value of supplemental staffing nurses in terms of productivity is usually a concern. Recent literature on the subject of nursing productivity, as pertinent to supplemental staffing nurses, is reviewed. This essay proposes a model to analyze the productivity of supplemental staffing nurses. A productivity worksheet is also presented. Implications for nurse administrators are identified, so that supplemental staffing services can be used appropriately and productivity can be maximized.
