Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to examine two ecclesiological documents of major importance in the twentieth century, the World Council of Churches's Christ And The Church and the Second Vatican Council's De Ecclesia, in the light of non-comparative approaches to ecclesiology. In order to do this the essay will deal with (1) a brief historical survey of the state of ecclesiology up until recent times, (2) a brief discussion of some of the recent trends in non-comparative ecclesiology, (3) a more detailed delineation of one particular thesis, that of Franz Leenhardt, (4) an examination of the documents mentioned above, demonstrating how they already exhibit the type of approach advocated by Leenhardt, and (5) a conclusion.
