Abstract
The history of the ark in ancient Israel is very obscure. At the onset of this study, it is apparent that the evidence of the texts and the insights of biblical scholars is not going to yield a definitive statement for a conclusion. At best, we will add our own insight to the growing body of scholarship.
While this statement may seem pessimistic at first glance, it is an honest appraisal of the situation. It is an axiom of this writer that the ambiguities and tensions which exist in the texts should not be forced to an artificial resolution. Where doubt exists in the Bible, it will be reflected in the following pages.
Centuries ago, an editor of Deuteronomy wrote: "Things hidden belong to Yahweh our God, but things revealed are ours and our children's for all time . . . ''(Dt. 29:29). We are not so bold as to seek the hidden things; only to reflect upon that which has been revealed.
