Abstract

In 1837 Ralph Waldo Emerson announced, "Our day of dependence, our long apprenticeship to the learning of other lands, draws to a close... We have listened too long to the courtly muses of Europe." In 1844, again trying to sever the strings of European influence, he drew a portrait of the ideal poet who would express the times and people of America; but, in the end, he concluded, "I look in vain for the poet whom I describe."
