Abstract
The cannon on the left roared and the ensuing rounds crashed upon dirt and wood and flesh. And from the right came galloping horses, mounted by men with red-lined capes, yellow silk sashes, and wet glistening sabres, swinging, cutting, and shouting for victory. Brother met brother, son fought father, and cousin killed cousin on the dark and bloody ground of .America's Civil War. Time eased the pain and healed the wounds of battle, but the scar of that bloody moment of fratricide remained, and the story of that traumatic experience, the challenge of interpreting its causes, and the allurement of educing the lasting explanation, have provided for over a century fertile ground for the tillers of history.
