Abstract

The main purpose in writing this paper is to make a study of the major mathematics texts and programs in use today and to outline a text that would not only increase the student's knowledge of mathematics, but would also stimulate his interest and assist him in the pursuit of his career. The paper contains only a brief outline of a textbook which the author hopes to complete in the future. It is a text to be used in grade 9 for the non-college bound students.

The author has tried a pilot program using his basic outline and has found that the students have learned to manipulate whole numbers, fractions, and mixed numbers. Material was kept as simple as possible and still explain the ideas thoroughly. Most of these students have come through a system which introduced the "modern" vocabulary, thus making it necessary to use only a little time on the review of these concepts. Interest was kept by frequent use of games and special situations such as a sieve and major square. This approach to math has been a success with the group of students who participated in the program; they seemed to show more interest and to retain the basic skills which were taught them than any of the author's previous classes.
