Abstract

The shift from mastery of subject matter to guidance in educational experiences has resulted at times in an over-emphasis on child developmental factors, growth, and readiness, and further, has resulted in viewing these factors as ends in themselves to the extent of lessening the "learning to learn" proper to the elementary school. Being overly demanding in subject matter on one hand, and on the other, leaving the child on his own are two detrimental extremes. A pre-liberal arts approach, fitted to the learner's maturity, would seem to more properly accomplish the energizing of his intellectual capacities.
