Abstract

American drama has, since its conception been looked upon as the bastard child of European drama. Rarely has there been a success scored on the American stage that the critics have not immediately traced back to European inspiration and seen as but a poor stepchild, That there has been great influence exerted by Europe on American dramatists, that specific themes and subject matter can be discovered as the source of American plays cannot be denied, but that the American theater is but a poor stepchild of European theater is an exaggeration.
