Abstract
American history presents no more controversial figure in the office of Chief Executive than that of Andrew Johnson. Writers since his time have tried various methods by which I to extricate the t;rue facts about the man, his administration, and the reasons underlying the multifarious propaganda concerning him and his presidential policies.
All writers are agreed that the task which fell to Johnson was without precedent. Lincoln's unfinished task of "binding up the nation's wounds" was a herculean duty and fraught with dangerous decisions and vindictive hatreds.
