Abstract
The first point Newman makes in treating the problem of Scripture and Tradition is that there is a Revelation. This possibly seems to be a truism. The reason, however that he emphasizes this is due to the problem of Latitudinarianism to which he addressed himself. This Revelation is a fact and it has a content. Revelation, to Newman, is basically the word of God spoken to men. Because he has spoken, it would be absurd to say that his message contains no subject matter. Why, Newman would ask, would he speak unless he meant tb say something. It does violence to reason to grant that God has made a revelation but that this revelation says nothing definite or is merely arbitrary. This would be saying that in revealing he revealed nothing.
