Abstract
During the Middle Ages, the state of Burgundy achieved economic and political prominence through the skillful use of financial and diplomatic power to attain its goals. From the foundation of the Burgundian state in 1384 until its collapse in 1477, the history of Burgundy is one of the Steady territorial expansion and consistent economic growth. Throughout Burgundian history, the grand dukes obtained practical independence from the kings o France, acquired the wealthiest regions of northern Europe as their personal possession, controlled multi-cultural area that stretched from Frisia to Switzerland, and held the balance of power in the Hundred Years' War.
