Abstract
In this part of the paper I want to present Teilhard's concern with the problem of the incorporation of the phenomenon of consciousness into the evolutionary process of the universe as an underlying factor in the development of his thought. His solution to the problem is significant because with it he establishes the basis for a direction in evolution. He tries to establish that evolution has a direction by showing that consciousness, everywhere potential in matter, emerges and is transmuted into spirit.
