Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to give a systematic and comprehensive account of the problem of expressing elements of an integral domain as products of prime elements. Our discussion will involve examining those integral domains in which prime factorizations exist for all elements without multiplicative inverses, and the conditions under which these factorizations are "unique" in a sense.
