Abstract
Hans Urs von Balthasar, the Swiss theologian, maintains that the truth of Revelation must be approached through a theological aesthetics. Von Balthasar dismisses the Thomist metaphysic in favor of the Augustinian emphasis upon beauty: only "beauty' combines freedom and coherent unity. For him "truth" is either coherent and necessary, or free and dichotomous. Hence the systematization of the revealed truth, which an intellectualist theology attempts, always seeks understanding at the price of locking the revelation into a false pattern of logical necessity.
