Abstract
The current statistics on divorce in our co1mtry are overwhelming. The rate of divorce has not risen gradually, but dramatically, affecting the lives of millions of adults and their children. "Though the divorce rate has been rising steadily since World War II, with a brief respite in the fifties, the seventies saw the rate more than double, from a ratio of 47 per 1000 married persons to 100 per 1000 in 1980. And over half these couples have children under 18. Janice M. Hammond cites that sixty percent of all divorces involve children. Another estimate is that forty-five percent of today's children will spend a year or more living with one parent and that in seven out of ten cases it will be due to divorce or separation. These are staggering figures to consider for those whose work is centered on children. While one is stunned by the numbers and estimates of this phenomenon, we also become concerned and baffled as to what the result of divorce will be on the children of our society.
