Abstract

Every teacher is faced with the problem of fitting reading material to children's reading ability. Any attempt 1n the past to give children suitable material has been largely a matter of guesswork. This i s true especially in regard to religion textbooks. The vocabulary and the structural elements of the passages in the religion textbooks are too difficult for the average child ·to comprehend. An objective method of determining what material is suitable for children of given reading ability is needed by every classroom teacher. In selecting textbooks, the superintendent and the supervisor should have a means of knowing whether the books are within the reading ability of the children for whom they are intended. It is of utmost importance that writers of textbooks for children have an objective method for determining whether their vocabulary and sentence structure are such as will offer no serious obstacles to children who are to read them.
