Abstract
In January , 1862 , the Confederate army in the West occupied a very extended front . The western front stretched through Kentucky from the Mississippi River to the Cumberland Mountains. The left flank of the Confederate line rested on the Mississippi River at Columbus, Kentucky. Running eastward, the line passed through Forts Henry and Donelson; through Bowling Green and finally culminated at the Cumberland Mountains. This front was only a defensive line, intended only to keep the Union armies out of the deep-South.
