Abstract

It was in the 1950's that foreign language study became very popular. Administrators searched eagerly for adequately prepared educators as students' demands for a foreign language soared. Universities began to require more language study within the various colleges. Students, therefore, wanted to prepare themselves with introductory language studies in high school. Perhaps the attraction for an extensive foreign language endeavor was based on the American fear of Russian superiority in space and education, yet other factors do enter into America's expedient development of a foreign language program in the public schools.
