Abstract
Median filtering is a nonlinear scheme which has been used with some success in suppressing impulsive noise components of signals while maintaining signal edges. The median filtering technique (both 1-D and 2-D) has been developed in recent years and has been applied in digital image processing and speech processing. In this essay we will describe median filters , discuss their properties and implementation, and survey the literature on this topic. In addition, a new type of nonlinear filter, the "combination filter" is proposed. Median, mean, and combination filters are implemented on the computer to compare their performance. References and c01nputer programs are included.
