Abstract
There is one authority in the Church and that is Christ. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Christ has authority over all creation because by his obedience to his Father through his death and resurrection, he has transformed all creation. Christ's claim to authority is established by his total self-giving for all mankind. All authority in the Church, if valid, participates in the authority of Christ which is based on the power of God's Spirit which is the love in the Church. All authority in the Church must perform the same function as Christ as the transforming principle which makes it possible for the community of the Church to be truly Christian.
