Abstract
The old colonial movement that reached its height in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries had been to a large extent a migration of population from impoverished, crowded, intolerant Europe to new and more prosperous lands. Governments supported exploring expeditions and fought wars .with rival colonial powers for various reasons such as patriotism, monarchial prestige, and to establish trading monopolies that would bring a favorable balance of trade in the precious metals in accordance with the prevailing mercantilist theories of national wealth. There were conflicts for supremacy between Holland and England, and between Great Britain and France. However, the lasting result of this early colonialism was that a new world had been discovered and Europeanized.
