Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to increase the readers knowledge regarding children being present during the birth of their siblings. A review of literature is presented. Several aspects involving the presence of children are addressed. They are growth and development, separation anxiety, childbirth and the family, relevant research, establish programs and the importance of child preparation. The summary of four interviews in the Milwaukee area reveal the practices and attitudes in this community. The literature and interviews suggest that with proper preparation and a support person, children being present at the birth of their sibling often have a positive experience. Included is a list of guidelines, topics for future research and educational resources available to help prepare a child for the birth of a sibling.
