mysterious of the races of Europe, are celebrated for t he loyalty with which t hey cling to the faith and customs of their fathers. Francis Xavier, the youngest of six children, of one of the first families of Navarre, was a child of his race. To his mother, Donna Maria, he owed the name Xavier, the title of the royal ancestral castle. She was distantly related to the kings of Navarre and Aragon. Don Juan de Jassu, his father, was a lawyer, and President of the Royal Council, the supreme governing body of Navarre.
