Abstract

Life expectancy in the United States has jumped sharply from 47 years in 1900 to more than 70 years in 1960. It has been estimated that about one quarter of all human beings who have ever reached the age of 65 are alive today. This is a combination of rapid total population increase and extended longevity. It has been estimated that the number over 65 has been increasing about twice as fast as the rest of the population since 1900. As of July 1, 1967, there were 446,000 people in the State of Wisconsin over the age of 65.
