Abstract
Much can be discovered about Robert Browning's growth as an artist by the comparison of similar characters in an earlier and later work. Considering Browning's fascination with character, it seems profitable to wonder if there could not be a dynamic relationship between two important characters, one from a successful dramatic monologue and the other from his later masterpiece, The Ring and the Book. The first problem, then, for me was to find a meaningful echo of Browning's hero, Giuseppe Caponsacchi, in the dramatic monologues. Who would be a more unlikely parallel to the noble soldier- saint than "poor brother Lippi"?
