Abstract
The knee joint, interposed between the two longest skeletal components of the human body, must provide both stability and mobility for optimum functional capacity. Being the great lengthener and shortener of the lower extremity, the knee joint requires a free excursion, particularly into extension. In addition, its weight-bearing role necessitates the strength not only to support the body in stance, but to withstand even greater forces encountered during the moments of propulsion and restraint in locomotion.
