Abstract
In the English language and especially in the American idiom, pairs of words are associated to form an inseparable duality. Commonplace examples that occur in normal speech include "salt and pepper", "man and woman", and "black and white". Is this trait merely an idiosyncrasy or does it mirror something more deeply significant? If one were to examine the individual parts of each of the pairs cited, a striking element would become clear. In each case the one element is to some degree the antithesis of the other. Despite, or possibly because of, the antithesis posed, it is necessary to comprehend the one in order to understand the other...
