Abstract

The definition of wit has an interesting literary history ranging from "mental quickness or sharpness; acumen" noted in its earliest historical context by the Oxford English Dictionary to "that quality of speech or writing which consists in the apt association of thought and expression, calculated to surprise and delight by its unexpectedness; later always with reference to the utterance of brilliant or sparkling things in an amusing way."
