Abstract

The California Achievement and the Science Research Association Achievement Tests, administered to the Duluth diocesan elementary school children, test several areas, such as, reading, language arts, spelling, and arithmetic. However, since the lowest achievement was in arithmetic reasoning, concepts, and computation, arithmetic was chosen for this study for the three-year period, 1958 to 1961 inclusive. It was assumed that probably these low scores reflected insufficient preparation of these teachers, lack of teaching experience, and other teacher preparation factors. The professional preparation of teachers appeared an important factor for consideration in a comprehensive analysis of the causes of these low scores.
