Abstract

In the past, the traditional concept of education stressed primarily mastery of subject matter. Education, as now interpreted in today's schools, seeks first of all mastery of subject matter but, in addition, touches every aspect of an individual's personality and is affected by experiences and conditions both within and without the school situation. Current educational philosophies have played their part in enlarging the concept. The modem concept of education is also an outgrowth of continuing research regarding human growth and development. Modem research has taught the teacher some basic rules of mental hygiene applicable to teaching situations and for this reason the present day educator is more concerned than his predecessors with student attitude and opinion, how a student feels about his school, how a student feels about his classmates, to what degree he feels he "belongs."
