Abstract

Concern for the education of gifted children is not new. Almost from their beginning, the American schools have tried to provide adequately for youngsters with outstanding ability. Interest in the gifted, though, has been sporadic. In our twentieth century, beginning about 1920, educators recognized that some children possessed superior mental abilities and that perhaps they needed education different from that provided for other children.
