Abstract
Although the Tobacco Industry has had its beginning since the early days of Colonial America, yet I have restricted my topic to the period after World War II, The paper specifically touches on the Cigarette Industry, the major product of the Tobacco. The essay attempts to analyse the structure, behaviour, performance and the latest merger movement. Under structure, I found concentration, product differentiation and barriers to entry to be the most important factors. For the study of the behaviour, prices and price leadership were the important elements, Profits, pricing over time and product innovation, the anti-trust case of 1946 and the cigarette code of 1964 were the key variables in the performance. The paper ends with a brief summary of the latest merger movement and a conclusion.
