Abstract

The cost of nursing care has historically been included as part of the room charge, along with meals, housekeeping and overhead expenses. Nursing departments have been classified as cost centers, versus revenue centers, inferring that nursing is an expense rather than a revenue-generating service. The present emphasis on cost containment with third party reimbursement has caused health providers to take a closer look at where the health care dollar is spent. Nursing, as the largest department in a hospital, is frequently the target for budget cuts. Therefore, it behooves the nurse administrator to have factual data on the cost of nursing to the individual patient. Armed with this information, the nurse administrator can effectively manage the department in a financially sound manner and better defend the nursing budget.
